Hello everyone I am Ms. Van Haften and I am one of the second grade teachers here at MMSA. I moved around quite a bit as a child. I was born in Illinois and spent most of my childhood in upstate New York. We moved to MN when I was 16. I went to Crown College in St. Bonifacious, MN for my teaching degree. I knew I wanted to be a teacher after the first day of kindergarten! I am the oldest child in my family (I have 8 younger siblings.) and I knew this is what I wanted to do. My great aunt was my inspiration. She taught me in 1st grade and taught for over 50 years! She continued to tutor students up until last year. She taught me to have a passion for reading and for doing whatever is necessary to help your students succeed, I couldn’t have asked for a better role model. My favorite part of being a teacher is that moment when my kids learn something they have been struggling with. That moment when they realize they did it is the most exciting moment for a teacher. We all can learn. We can all do hard things. I am lucky to get to see it happen every day! I am so excited to be here this year!! I taught for 3 years at Cedar Riverside Community schools and I enjoy meeting all the families. I am excited to build relationships with all of my kids and their families. We are going to do amazing things this year!
