MMSA Distance Learning Summer Academy

As we know this will be a summer like no other due to COVID-19, and Minnesota Math and Science Academy is prepared to move full speed ahead to offer ALL children the opportunity to engage daily in Math, English Language Arts, Science and Social Studies through our first Summer School program that will be delivered in a digital environment! This opportunity is FREE for all students who will be entering Grades 1-12 next school year.

Minnesota Math and Science Academy has been developing our Distance Learning Summer Academy to ensure all students have access to high-quality learning opportunities at home through the summer months delivered in a digital environment! This opportunity is FREE for all students who will be entering Grades 1-12 next school year.

Summer Academy begins the week of June 15th and is intended to reduce the disruption of learning for our students by providing alternative instruction through July 30th. The courses will be facilitated by MMSA licensed, highly qualified teachers and they will be available throughout the summer to work with your students.

For those families who wish to take advantage of the  Distance Learning Summer Academy, the registration window for those students entering grades 1-12 will open on June 1st and close on Friday, June 5 at 4:00 p.m.  

ELEMENTARY – GRADES 1 through 5

June Summer Academy
June 15 through June 30
9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.

The first session will take place from June 15 through June 30. Students will be provided learning opportunities in literacy using Lexia. Students will work at their own pace, and teachers will provide feedback on a weekly basis.
Lexia programs help students rapidly develop reading skills in an engaging and dynamic way. This extra time will help students achieve their reading goals at an even faster rate.

July Summer Academy
July 6 through July 30
9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.

The second session will take place from July 6 through July 30. Students will be provided learning opportunities in math and reading using the program Freckle selected by our  teachers and aligned to MMSA standards. Teachers will facilitate and work with students on an individual basis. 
Freckle provides math and ELA, science and social studies assignments that can be assigned to students. In math, lessons cover K- 8 content but some of the Algebra and Geometry assignments are certainly appropriate for students taking Algebra and Geometry. The lessons adapt to your students’ levels (they will take a short pre-test before they get started with a lesson).  

MIDDLE SCHOOL – GRADES 6 through 8

June Summer Academy
June 15 through June 30
9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.

The first session will take place from June 15 through June 30. Students will be provided learning opportunities in literacy using Read Theory and mathematics inquiry using Google classrooms and facilitated by a MMSA teacher. Students will work at their own pace, and teachers will provide feedback on a weekly basis.
Read Theory is an online tool that offers reading activities for all levels. It will adapt to the student’s individual lexile level. It provides a plethora of articles with skill building exercises. It provides data on each student. Students will increase their reading comprehension levels. Students may be started on lower grade level reading activities and once they pass these, they will be able to move on to more difficult passages. 
A MMSA math teacher will create a Google classroom for all 6,7,and 8th grade students who register for summer school. The students can independently work on the various math assignments. 

July Summer Academy
July 6 through July 30
9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m

The second session will take place from July 6 through July 30. Students will be provided learning opportunities in math, reading, science and social studies using Khan Academy facilitated by MMSA licensed teachers. Teachers will work with students on an individual basis. 
Khan Academy allows student practice at their own pace, first filling in gaps in their understanding and then accelerating their learning.

HIGH SCHOOL – GRADES 9 through 12

Register for Summer Academy Credit Recovery 

June/July Summer Academy Credit Recovery
June 15 through July 30
9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.

The Minnesota Math and Science Academy Credit Recovery Program is designed for students who have not successfully earned credit in the traditional classroom setting. Students are given an opportunity to recoup credits through online classes which cover the content originally delivered in a face-to-face class. Core classes are delivered through a web-based instructional program, Edgenuity. Students complete lessons, assignments, and assessments, working toward pre-set targets for successful completion.  Online courses, containing multimedia content and assignments, are monitored by a certified teacher. 
Motivated students can complete 1-2 semester credits during summer school. Students work on 1 course until it’s complete before moving onto a 2nd course. Credits are Pass/Fail.
Once registered, your college counselor, Ms. Serpil will identify which course(s) need to be recovered.  Students will receive a confirmation notice that includes information about your scheduled course(s) and teacher(s)

Minnesota Math and Science Academy will be offering various online clubs for high school students to explore and discover their passions. Our clubs offer a relaxed, enjoyable experience led by a faculty or staff member who shares the students’ passion for the topic. Shared interests coupled with respectful, engaging social opportunities deepen relationships and provide of our high school students with the opportunity to collaborate and socialize. All clubs  are offered on a non-credit basis.
